A great place to stay, with wonderful owners who live on the property. The yard is a well kept desert botanic garden filled with every type of cacti imaginable. 5 minute drive to Saguaro National Park west trailhead with fantastic hiking trails. We throughly enjoyed our stay.

Beautifully appointed casita and gardens with lovely views. Very enjoyable to watch the quail and other birds outside the kitchen window as meals were prepared. Covered terrace was perfect protection for enjoying the winter sun. Lovely views of the sunrise, the skies, the desert, and the mountains. Hot tub perfect for night sky viewing on a chilly desert night. Great selection of movies, games, and books. Home theater/entertainment system was beyond expectation and easy to use. All was clean and well maintained. Karen was charming and accommodated our every need as well as trying to anticipate any others we might have. Definitely planning to stay here again and again and again if available.

Beautiful and elegant casita nestled among the cactus. Our hostess was super responsive and friendly; could not ask for more. All amenities were outstanding and the home theatre was amazing. A quick drive into Tucson via 1-10 and easy access to nature trails and hiking. Loved the book collection although we did not have much time for reading. A "keeper" for sure.

This is a perfect place for a couple - very attractive, with lovely garden setting (and plenty of birds!) to enjoy the Tucson sunrise and sunshine. Much better than a condo somewhere. We liked being outside of town but only 10 or 15 minutes to the best restaurants and sites. Jim and Karen were very helpful but not intrusive. Nice shower, large bedroom and nice home entertainment system when you wanted to watch a film or a game. The booking was straightforward.

5.0   -   The Perfect Place for Us
Reviewed on Feb 05, 2017
My wife and I spent 2 weeks in January at La Casita, Jim and Karen's place in the Saguaro Mountain foothills.  It was the perfect place for us.  The casita was spacious, comfortable and quiet -- much larger in real life than in the pictures on VRBO. The living room has big cushy chairs and blankets to cozy up in, a big-screen TV for those interested, and lots of earthy Southwestern charm. It's located in the foothills of the Saguaro National Park West just minutes from some fabulous trailheads.  One of our favorites was the Sweetwater Trail only 5 minutes away (other favorites further afield included the Hugh Norris Trail, the Douglas Spring Trail and the Phoneline Trail).  Karen and Jim live next door and were extremely warm and helpful with anything we needed. Karen even lent my wife a pair of her new hiking boots so my wife could try them out. It was unusually cold when we were there or we would have eaten more breakfasts and some dinners outside on the back sitting area looking at Karen's beautiful desert garden and mountains in the distance. The way the casita is oriented you can catch sunrise out back and sunset out front. We were able to use Karen and Jim's hot tub when we wanted, watching the clear stars overhead, and their small pool is also available. The trade-off with being in such a beautiful setting is that restaurants and food shopping are between 10 and 20 minutes away, but it was always so nice coming "home" at the end of the day.

5.0   -   The most accurate assessment is that the 'casita' was as represented- expectations met.

We stayed 5 nights. owners were helpful but not intrusive. poolside, the property looks from west Tucson foothills NW to Catalinas- a perfect sundowner spot. the 'casita ' patio looks into a palo verde/cactii filled wash alive with the dove, quail , hawks and happily the songbirds and hummers which had already left our place in Wyoming, but which we rejoined in Tucson. a very enjoyable, comfortable and quiet base camp for all the exploring, urban and more back country, a person would like to do.

We chose this property because of the interesting descriptions and it being out of the way, but still close to central Tucson. We had a GREAT TIME. The Casita is large with plenty of room for the two of us and everything was well organized and completely comfortable. We enjoyed getting to know our hosts, Jim and Karen, over a few glasses of wine. They provided an unending source of information for places to go, things to see, and outstanding food. We came with a few of our days already scheduled and had no problems filling the rest of the time with either exploring the southern part of Arizona based on Jim and Karen's information, or just sitting back on our patio and watching the never ending parade of birds and other wildlife in their backyard. It was great to completely relax and unwind and experience a part of the country very different from even the desert we have in southern California. We would highly recommend this property and our hosts Jim and Karen!

I took my 17 year old daughter on a special mother/daughter bonding trip for her senior year of high school. We are so glad we picked this VRBO rather than Loews resort, which is where we originally tried to get reservations. It was quiet, cozy, comfortable and everything we could have hoped for. We loved its location in a quiet neighborhood in the foothills. We found a lovely hiking trail just a short drive up the road (Thunderbird/Sweetwater at the end of Camino del Cerro). The bed was super comfortable and the casita was even more spacious than it looked in the pictures. Jim and Karen were terrific hosts. We felt very well cared for. Highly recommend this property for a relaxing getaway or base camp for exploring Saguaro National Park! We hope to be back.

We've stayed at many VRBOs, in terrific locations, but this Casita in Tucson is the best. The Casita itself is beautifully appointed, and roomy, but it's the (private) patio and gardens that take the experience over the top. We came to Tucson for a "home base" for some birdwatching. Little did we know that the birding at the Casita would rival anything we found elsewhere -- Karen has birdfeeders up in numerous locations. We saw gila and ladder-backed woodpeckers, Costa's and broad-billed hummers, verdin, curve-billed thrasher, mourning doves, Gambel's quail and many more -- all in our bathrobes on the patio. Never before had we heard of bathrobe birding!! Jim and Karen are terrific hosts, we had great talks on their deck during happy hour. Treat yourselves to a stay at the Casita!!

Our week at La Casita in the Tucson Mountain foothills was a highlight of our two month trip to the Southwest. With its high ceilings and open concept it provided a light-filled, spacious and tastefully decorated dwelling for the two of us and our yellow Lab. A comfy bed, good reading lights, a mini library of books, DVDs and music, a well-stocked kitchen--it was hard to tear ourselves away. Mornings on the patio were a special delight as each day brought new plant and bird discoveries in the stunning desert garden surrounding the Casita. Jim and Karen were friendly and hospitable; we turned to Jim's website throughout our week for background and day-trip suggestions and appreciated Karen's tips for good dog-walking destinations. We have already recommended La Casita to friends and will continue to do so! Thanks Jim and Karen for providing such a great introduction to the delights of Tucson and surrounding area.

As a spur of the moment getaway (we were fortunate that the Casita was available!) We both hibernated and explored Tucson. La Casita was beautifully secluded yet convienent to All Things Tucson and Beyond. Everything we needed was available to us, plus things we hadn't even thought were in the need category. We are sure it is The Best Spot in Tucson for many reasons, but particularly because Jim and Karen are Tour Guides extrodinaire! Morning coffee and breakfast outside ... circle around the full moon viewed from the hot tub ... cactus garden tour ... restaurant recommendations ... mission suggestions ... all made up a much needed three day respite for us. Thank you, thank you both for opening up this opportunity.

La Casita de Tucson was even better than we expected it to be. We found a relaxing, optimally located guest house with lots of added gifts! In no particular order: --located on the western aspects of Tucson in a very lightly traveled area with great roads and location good for additional tranquility and recharging --close to the Tucson mountains for hiking, walking, picnicking --close to I-10 and other major streets making it easy to get to Tucson or Tubac or elsewhere --wonderful back patio for sunrise experiences, amid a desert garden full of colors and birds to enjoy --spacious rooms with tall ceilings and lots of windows for an even sunnier experience --well stocked kitchen to fix meals and allow you enjoy even more time sitting, reading, birding, relaxing or watching movies, instead of going out if you don't want --owners are extremely knowledgeable about many restaurants--we had 100% success with their suggestions!!!! --gracious and sensitive owners who see that you have everything you need, but also sensitive to giving you space to relax and have private time We would DEFINITELY return, hands down!!

We spent 4 nights at Jim and Karen's Casita. It is clean, comfortable, spacious and beautifully decorated. The large casita is filled with the most comfortable furniture I've ever lounged in. The landscaping is marvelous, and the owners are friendly and helpful. Their website was chock full of excellent suggestions about Southern AZ. Karen sent us on a hike with dozens of nice examples of rock art that is not mentioned in any guide book I am aware of. We had a very relaxing and fun time there!
